The international conference RESCUE 2024 was held at Harpa, Reykjavik for the 15th time, from October 11th to 13th, organized by Landsbjörg. It has been held biennially since 1990. This year, there were 50 speakers, and the conference took place in four simultaneous sessions, along with an extensive exhibition for search and rescue personnel.
The CEO of ÖRUGG Consulting Engineers, Böðvar Tómasson, delivered a presentation titled "Risk Management in Emergency Response Projects," where he discussed how risk management methodologies can be used to enhance safety. The presentation covered key aspects of risk assessment, how defenses and responses are connected to the level of risk, and what issues need to be considered when determining risk in rescue operations. It also addressed how risk must be weighed against potential benefits to assess the feasibility of actions.
The lecture was well attended, and numerous questions were raised from the audience. It is clear that there is significant interest in safety issues and the risks faced by rescue personnel, as it is essential to ensure the best possible safety in such work.
